Online Business Ideas Are Great In Theory

While you’re searching the Internet looking for those mystical, ‘online business ideas’ to take you from zero to millionaire within a few months you might want to take a reality check on what the fancy sales pages don’t bother telling you.

The theory of working for yourself, sitting at your computer, pulling in cash while you’re sleeping, travelling the world, shopping at the best stores…. all sounds great. And if you check out any of the sales pages marketing to the people who want to work online, they’ll all tell you that not only is it possible, but YOU can do it!

Yep. You. Even if you’ve never used the Internet for anything other than checking your email. Even if you can’t type two words, and you don’t know your HTML from your PHP. (Actually, come to think of it, I don’t know the difference between them either. :))

However, once you get past the theory, the reality is very different. That’s not to say you can’t do it. You can. Just be ready to roll up your sleeves and work your butt off for a while.

What sort of business can you work from home? Pretty much anything you can do offline, you can do online. You might not be able to physically do it yourself, but there is nothing to stop you from acting as the middleman and outsourcing services in just about any corner of the globe. (by the way, do you have any idea why they say ‘corner of the globe’ when it’s round? Maybe it’s pre Columbus days.)

So whether you already have a business in the real world and you want to turn it into an online business empire, or you just want the freedom of working for yourself and fancy your chances as an Internet Entrepreneur, rest assured there’s a model to suit.

It all comes down to one thing at the end of the day.

Selling. You can sell services or products, physical or digital, your own or someone else’s. But somewhere along the line, someone has to buy something in order for it to be considered a ‘business’. Same as in the real world really. :)

Selling Your Own Products/Services

Let’s assume for a minute you’re already something. Maybe it’s hand knit sweaters, or greeting cards. Doesn’t really matter what it is. Unfortunately, about only way you will ever reach customers outside of your immediate local vicinity is by advertising in a national newspaper or magazine. And that’s expensive. Very.

Of course, your local customers can spread the word to their family and friends, but, let’s face it, unless you already have thousands of customers, then the number of people they can refer to you is going to be pretty limited.

But. Let’s assume that you shell out a few pounds (or dollars or whatever currency you deal in), and invest in a website to showcase your products. Now you can advertise to the whole world. And you can do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All with no further cost.

Put up a Fanpage on Facebook, with a link to your newly created website and before you can say, ‘Abracadabra’, you could have an army of folks lining up to see what you have on offer.

Do you know Facebook has over 500 million active users? And 50% of them log in every single day. Try reaching that many folks with a newspaper ad!

Nothing to Sell?

Alas, not every wannabe entrepreneur already has something lined up they want to sell. Doesn’t matter. When it comes to online business ideas, you can just sell stuff belonging to other people and earn money in the form of commissions.

Affiliate marketing is a particularly good model for those who are just starting out and don’t want to have to deal with the hassles of customer support, shipping, refunds, complaints, etc.

How about the guy who fixes your car? You go to him all the time because you know he’s good, his rates are reasonable and he always treats you right. Sure you’re already telling your mates about him because you know he offers a good deal and you don’t want them to miss out. But how many more people would you tell if he was willing to pay you a commission for every new customer you sent his way? How about if he was willing to pay you a percentage every time that customer used his services?

Online is no different. You can send potential customers to individual businesses or you can sell via online marketplaces such as Amazon and Ebay. The possibilities are endless. The rewards can be huge.

But so is the work required in order to make any substantial money from it.

And unfortunately, that’s where a lot of hopeful, online business owners fall down. They read some fancy sales page that tells them they can be rich by this time next week and when they find out the ‘week’ doesn’t actually start until you’ve spent months and years learning and building up the skills needed, suddenly, it doesn’t seem like such a great business idea after all.

I know a guy whose sales page will tell you how he went from waiting tables to millionaire in just a few short months. And it’s true. He did. But he spent years beforehand learning everything he needed to know to make it happen.

He learned how to put up sales pages, he learned the art of copywriting, he learned how to optimise his sales funnel so that it brought in the most amount of cash, with the least amount of outlay. He spent thousands on training courses and tools.

But once he figured it out and set it up, … ? The rest as they say is history.

Your business idea doesn’t have to be the next Facebook, or Google, or YouTube. It just has to be something that people want badly enough to pay for. And you have to be the one to put it in front of them.

Can you do that?
